Miss Bridge’s Maths Set – homework

Please answer these word problems – put your answers in a comment or write them in your learning log.

  1. I buy a £10 phonecard, I already have £2.65 credit on my phone. I make a call costing £1.83, how much credit have I got now?
  2. To make a litre of light blue paint you need 2 tins of blue paint and 3 tins of white paint. If I need 9 litres of light blue paint, how many tins of blue paint and how many tins of white paint do I need?
  3. In the computer store there is a 25% off everything sale. I buy a scanner, which at full price should have been £240. How much do I pay for it? When I go to pay for it, the assistant says I can have a further 5% off if open a storecard.  What would the price be if I opened a storecard?
  4. In a half price sale I buy a stereo for £110.65, a mobile phone cover for £3.80 and a DVD player for £126.50. What would have been the total I would have paid for these items if there had not been a sale?
  5. Both my brother’s ages and mine are prime numbers. My brother is 6 years older than me. What could our ages be?

  1. (1.This answer is the first word problem.) You have to add(+)£10.00 to £2.65 , and then you have to subtract(-) £1.83 from the 1st answer ,which is £12.65. Now, you have £10.82, which is your answer.!

  2. (2.This is the answer for the second word problem.)You have to work out 9×2 which = 18, and then you have to 9×3 which = 27. Finally this is your answer. You need 18 tins of blue paint and 27 tins of white paint! If you want to work out how many tins you need altogether then you have to do 18+27 which = 45. You need 45 tins altogether!

  3. (3.This is the answer for the third word problem.)You have to work out £240 divided by 4 which = £60.Now, you have to -(minus) £60 from £240 which =£180.That is the answer for 25%. Now, you have to work out 30%(because 25+5=30).You have to divide £240 by 10 which = £24,then you have to x £24 by 3 which = £72. Finally, you have to -(minus) £72 from £240 which is £108! 25%=£180, and 30% =£108!

  4. (4.This is the answer for the fourth word problem.)You have to work out £110.65 x 2 which = £221.30. Next, work out £126.50 x 2 which = £253.00. Lastly, work out £3.80 x 2 which = £7.60.
    Eventually, you have to add these answers together (£221.30+£253.00+£7.60=£481.90!) Your answer should be £481.90!

  5. (5.This is the answer for the fifth and final word problem (hooray!) You have to work out all the prime numbers which are 2-3-5-7-11-13-17-19-23-29-31-37-41-43-47-53-59-61-67-71-73-79-83-89-97-101! I will stop there because there are too many numbers! 🙂 The person who is saying the word problem age could be:5,7,11,13,17,23,31,47,53,61,73,83 ! The brothers age could be exactly the same as the girl or boy who is saying the word problem apart from the 5 (at the start!)

  7. 1. If you made a call costing £1.83 you would have £10.82 credit left.

    Method:
    Add £10.00 to £2.65 then subtract £1.83. [ (£10+£2.65)-£1.83]=£10.82

    2. For 9 litres of light blue paint, you would need 18 litres of blue paint and 27 litres of white paint.

    Key- LBP=light blue paint, BP= blue paint, WP= white paint.
    Method:
    1litre of LBP=2 litres of BP+ 3litres of WP
    9 litres of LBP= x litres of BP+ y litres of WP Because to get from 1 to 9 you multiply by 9 so you multiply the whole equation or number sentence by 9 too to get the answer. x=18 y=27

    3.With the 25% discount off the scanner, which is £240, when you go to pay for it, it will cost £180.
    If you open a storecard, you would have a further 5% off, so it would then cost £168.

    Method:
    PART A
    a) 25% of £240=£60
    b)£240-£60=£180

    PART B
    a)25%+5%= 30%
    b)30% of £240= £72
    c)£240-£72=£168

    4. In the half price sale, the stereo, mobile phone cover and DVD player would have cost £240.95, but originally it would be £481.90.

    Method:
    (£110.65+£3.80+£126.50)x 2= £481.90

    5. You could be 5 and your older brother could be 11, although, there are lots of other options.

    Method:
    2,3,5,7,11 are all prime numbers, in order, so I picked two numbers with a difference of 6.
    Other options would be 7 and 13, 11 and 17 etc.

    PRIME NUMBERS- A number that is in the 1 timestable and itself’s, but no other.
